## The Budget Pellet Promise The pellet grill market has exploded, and Pit Boss has positioned itself as the value play. The Navigator 850 is their mid-tier offering: 850 square inches, WiFi, digital control, and a flame broiler slider. On paper, it sounds like a steal. In practice? More complicated. ## Build and First Impressions Assembly took two hours with unclear instructions. Some bolt holes did not align perfectly. The steel gauge is thinner than competitors, and the paint showed a chip after the first month. The hopper holds 21 lbs of pellets. The WiFi setup is clunky. ## Cooking Performance At low-and-slow (225-275F), it does a respectable job. I smoked a brisket for 12 hours and temperature held within 20 degrees. Acceptable, not exceptional. The flame broiler slider works, sort of — you can get grill marks but calling it a real sear station is generous. Temperature swings during startup are more pronounced than higher-end pellet grills. Opening the lid at 225F drops to about 170F with 8-10 minute recovery. ## The WiFi Experience The WiFi works about 80% of the time. That other 20% involves random disconnections and delayed notifications. The PID controller maintains temperature well enough but lacks the precision of Traeger D2 or Camp Chef systems. ## Value Assessment At $500-600, the Navigator 850 offers a lot of space and features. For a casual smoker who cooks a few times a month, yes. For someone who wants reliability, save up for a Camp Chef or Traeger.
